Wednesday with Words: The Fear of Man

Cindy's recent post on Homeschooling and The Fear of Man prompted me look to back in my notebook for a quote I remembered copying a couple of months ago. I was reading Power Through Prayer by E.M Bounds and he quoted Richard Cecil (1748-1810) who wrote:

'I am fraid there is too much of a low, managing, contriving, manoeuvring temper of mind among us. We are laying ourselves out more than is expedient to meet one man's taste and another man's prejudice...'

He continues that there should be found in us, 'a simple habit of spirit and a holy but humble indifference to all consequences.'

Not long afterwards I was reading Galatians 1:10 and this verse smote me:

'Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God?
Or am I trying to please men?
If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.'

BIG GULP...
